Welcome back to our regular round up of Prosecco news and what is happening in the world of wine!
One of our favourite articles this month heralds the delights of Prosecco and praises the rise in popularity of Prosecco Valdobbiadene. Prosecco is Majestic Wines (a leading UK wine retailer) fourth most popular wine, behind a Sauvignon Blanc, and certain champagnes. However, the company have reported a 39 per cent increase in sales of Prosecco over the last six months while champagne sales have hardly moved.
It seems that in the UK Prosecco is being used as the drink for everyday celebrations and gatherings, something that we here in Italy have known for a while now! Steve Lewis, the chief executive of Majestic Wine, stated: “The growth of Prosecco is a long-term trend but it has really stepped up this year. It’s become a really social drink which is not just for celebrations but for drinking with friends and family on a Friday and Saturday night.”
In the last year Champagne sales have dived from £900m in 2008 to £599m in the UK, and according to the market research firm Mintel sales are expected to continue to fall in favour of Prosecco and other sparkling wines. This pattern has been evident among several other UK sellers and has provided a much needed boost in the UKs wine trade.
We are delighted that the exquisite taste of Prosecco Superiore is being appreciated by more people and look forward to the continuing future success of Follador Prosecco!
